  • Reviewed the progress made on the 1999-2000 school goal;
  • Identified additional data sources to support progress made on the school goal;
  • Examined the mission and vision as a means to help clarify our purpose and long range efforts;
  • Continued dialogue regarding strategies for goal setting that supports organizational alignment;
  • Created a context for school improvement and instructional efforts through the deployment of a school wide theme and planning related to the theme;
  • Reviewed updates in areas such as the learning center, discipline handbook, staff handbook

Summary statements:

The activities of our retreat day were specifically designed to be in alignment with building and district goals. The purpose of this development activity is to continue to promote the concept of aligning our efforts to improve student achievement

The overall goal of the retreat was to bring to light the following issues:

  • To assess a the school goal and reestablish our purpose;
  • To bring to light the importance of data sources and the use of data to guide school improvement work;

Concluding Statements:

General areas that we plan to address in the future as a result of this institute are as follows:

  • Continue to develop the school mission and vision;
  • Continue to participate in development activities that are geared make staff more comfortable with collecting and using data for improvement;

Summary statements:

Each teacher rated their level of understanding regarding writing instructional practices on a scale of one to four. On the average teachers fell in the range of 2.5 to 3. This indicates as a group an average level of understanding.

The overall goal of the afternoon was:

  • To begin the process of identifying specific strengths and areas in need of further attention related to writing instruction;
  • To continue to develop an understanding of data sources and the use of data to guide school improvement work;

CONCLUSION/FUTURE PLANNING

Concluding Statements:

General areas that we plan to address in the future as a result of this institute are as follows:

  • Continue to dig deeper in to writing instructional practices;
  • Continue to establish benchmarks for best practices for writing instruction;

  • Engaged in critical reflective dialogue through a KWHL format related to reading instruction and examined what we do well related to reading instruction, what we need to do to improve instruction, how we might do it, and what we need to learn
  • Reflected on things that are taking place that promote and hinder student achievement by conducting a force field analysis
  • Collected data related to our reading instructional practices across the grades by focusing on four key questions
  • Organized data into categories for further study and understanding
  • Continued dialogue regarding strategies for goal setting that supports organizational alignment

ASSESSMENT OF THE ACTIVITIES

Assessment of the activities:

Summary statements:

Four categories were identified from the force field analysis activity regarding what hinders student achievement. The categories are (1) Not Enough Time (2) Not Enough Collaboration (3) Student Issue - i.e. motivation, disruptions etc. (3) Inconsistencies

The overall goal of the afternoon was:

  • To initiate discussion about the principles of quality and how it relates to systems versus how improvements are made in traditional systems
  • To begin the process of identifying specific strengths and areas in need of further attention related to reading instruction;
  • To continue to develop an understanding of data sources and the use of data to guide school improvement work;

CONCLUSION/FUTURE PLANNING

Concluding Statements:

General areas that we plan to address in the future as a result of this institute are as follows:

  • Begin to gather more information related to the four areas hindering the improvement of student achievement;
  • Study and draw conclusions related the "what", "how" and "need to learn" information gather on the KWHL table;
  • Continue to dig deeper in to reading instructional practices;
  • Continue to establish benchmarks for best practices for reading instruction;
  • Continue to participate in development activities that are geared make staff more comfortable with collecting and using data for improvement;
