Pekin Public Schools District 108 was awarded a Learning Community 2000 grant for $3.5 million over 5-year period from the U.S. Department of Education. The purpose of the learning community is to foster citizenship, communication, collaboration, consensus, and connectivity between all community members. To ensure community input and involvement, Pekin 108 has organized a sixteen- member partner board representing the stakeholders of the wider community and/or task force chairpersons. District 108 is currently in the third year of the grant.

Goals for task force work:

Match needs assessment with training program and schedule
Develop a train the trainer program to meet community needs
Determine what training and technical services will be provided at no cost
Experiment with on-line assistance
Develop mentor programs for community volunteers
Assist public access sites with training needs
Use public access sites and school labs to provide training opportunities to community
