Students Build A City In Art
by Lynne Korte
This art unit is architecture and enclosing space. We design architecture
around interior shapes and spaces. How a building looks depends on what
will be its use, where it will be located, what materials will be used
in construction, how much money is available to build it, what physical
stresses can affect it, etc.
The students are designing for a crowded city environment. They are
using preformed shapes (reusable boxes, tubes, liners. and much more.)
You can see the first stage here. Next, they must put a layer of plaster
gauze over the whole structure to unify the composition visually, by color.
The last part of the project will be to give a sense of "scale" by pointing
details in "proportion" to the actual size of the building. In other words,
if the windows and doors are painted very small, the building looks very
large. We are thinking of displaying the models as a miniature city on
our gym floor and allowing a student walk through. We will have pictures
to follow our progress. Come visit our web site again to see the results.
