SPECIAL PROGRAMS
District #108 provides a variety of special programs and services to meet the needs of our students. The following programs and services are available for students at Willow School.
Title I
The purpose of Title I is to improve skills in reading and/or math and to develop a more positive self-concept for those children who need extra help and who qualify for services. Title I teachers work with students on an individual basis or in small groups and also in an inclusionary, co-teaching setting in the regular classroom.
Special Education
A variety of special education programs are provided in District #108 to help each child reach his/her full potential. Programs are developed on an individual basis to meet the child’s needs. At Willow these programs include self-contained instructional, resource, and consultation. Early Childhood provides instruction for identified preschool students.
Connections
The purpose of the program is to help students develop skills in problem-solving, communication, research, critical and creative thinking skills. The Connections teacher works with classroom teachers in developing instructional strategies to target these skills. The Connections teacher also works with identified students on a regular basis.
Reading Recovery
Reading Recovery program provides specialized instruction for first grade students who are experiencing difficulty in their first year of reading instruction. Identified students receive individualized daily instruction from a specially trained teacher.
Speech/Language
Specially trained teachers provide services for students with delayed or disordered speech and/or language development.
Counseling
Counseling is available one day a week from our school counselor. Counseling services are to assist children who are having any type of social or academic difficulty. Referrals can come from teachers or parents. Parents can make referrals by contacting your child’s teacher, the counselor or the school office.
Writing to Read
Willow School is equipped with a centralized IBM Writing to Read Lab. The classroom teachers, along with the lab assistant, utilize technology to help first grade and kindergarten students develop reading and writing skills.
Learning Center
The Learning Center is a multi-media resource used to meet individual needs of students. The Learning Center teacher provides instruction in the technology curriculum and assists both students and teachers in the discovery of information. Students visit the Learning Center at least once each week.
