Book Drive

Let the Title I Reading Department help you with a little spring cleaning. Please consider donating extra books, which your family no longer reads. Books should be in good condition and appropriate for middle school students. Books will be distributed for summer reading.
We are offering a friendly competition among the students. The class with the greatest number of donated books will receive a popcorn and Pepsi party. Collection dates are from April 26 to Ma
y 13.

Report Card Day

You or your child may pick-up their final report card on Friday, June 4 at 8:15. Buses will run, although students will be picked up a little later than usual. Students will receive their report card from their teachers in the back of the school, and then they may go home.

Broadmoor Baseball

Attention current sixth grade boys who will be attending Broadmoor in 2004-2005: Baseball tryouts will be held Monday, August 2, and Tuesday, August 3, 2004 from 11:00-1:00 at Shade Park. For more information, please contact Broadmoor Junior High at 477-4731.

Library Fees

PARENTS: It is Wilson School Policy to withhold the End-of-the-year Report Cards for any students who still owe fees. This would include students who owe the library for lost books or materials. With the end of the school year getting close, we would like to make parents aware of this policy. Individual letters will also go home prior to the last week of school for those students who are in jeopardy of not being eligible to receive their report cards.

Profile Sheets

On May 13, Wilson Intermediate School will be mailing home a parent input/student information profile. Please take the time to complete this form, as it will help us place your child in a classroom most conducive to his/her success next year. While we will not be taking requests for specific teachers, this is a chance for you to share information about how your child best learns. Please return this form to the office no later then Friday, May 21st. Class lists will be posted in late August after registration.

Tardies

We seem to be having an unusually high number of tardies. Some of your child's most important instruction occurs in the morning, and missing this instruction (even if it's only a few minutes) could adversely impact their learning and grades. We are starting to require students who are habitually late to make-up those lost minutes after school. Punctuality is an important characteristic that students will eventually take into the workplace, so please help instill the importance of being prompt. Another helpful hint is to set your clocks ahead a few minutes… that way you will always b on time or even early.

Reporting Absences

Attendance is the single most important factor in school success. Research shows that children who are in school most of the time do better on state tests. Studies also show that kids who are absent more often score lower on state tests. Being late for school hurts a child's learning, too. A student who is 10 minutes late every day will miss 30 hours of instruction during the year.

Having said that, we also realize there are reasons your child may miss school (illness, emergencies, etc.). Whenever a student is absent from school, state law and student safety require a parent contact. When your child is absent we ask that you call the school at 477-4722 to let us know. We need your child's name, his/her teacher, and the reason for the absence. Please leave a message on our answering machine if nobody answers the phone.

If you are unable to call the day of your child's absence, please send a note with him/her to give to the office upon return to school. Failure to do so will result in a letter from our office inquiring about your child's absence. If we do not receive an explanation from you, your child will be considered truant.

If your child is truant, you will receive 2 written warnings. Upon the third truancy, in compliance with District108 policy, you will receive a $25 fine from the Pekin Police Department. We hope to avoid this; we are just asking for your helping in communicating absences.

Here is a list of tips on how you can improve your child's school attendance:
· Talk with your child about the importance of attending school regularly.
· Avoid scheduling family trips or doctor appointments during school hours.
· Make sure your child stays healthy by eating nutritious food and getting enough sleep and exercise.
· Don't accept excuses for why your child "must" miss or be late for school.
· Discuss with your child what happened at school each day.
· Support school rules and consequences for skipping class and being tardy.
· Show your child why education is important. Give specific examples of how education helps people succeed.
· Lead by example. If children see parents taking off work for no real reason, they may expect to be able to do the same thing.

Communication Goals

In response to the District's Parent Survey given in spring 2002, the staff of Wilson is trying to improve communication. We will be working in three areas: assignment notebooks, newsletters, and progress reports. Wilson has developed the following expectations listed below. A survey will be conducted in March as to whether communication has improved.

Assignment Notebooks:
* Assignments filled out and notebooks sent home daily
* Include notification of special days and notes
* Parental review and acknowledgement

Newsletters:
* Will contain academic news and special information
*Will come home monthly on the last Friday of each month
* Parental Review
Progress Reports:

* Letter grades will be used in all academic subjects
* A checklist dealing with homework, test scores, and behavior will be included
* Progress reports will be sent home three times a year
* Parents are to review, sign, and return

General Mills Box Tops And Campbell Soup Labels

Once again we are asking students and their families to save Box Tops from participating General Mills cereals, snacks, Betty Crocker fruit snacks, Yoplait yogurt mulitpacks, Yoplait Go-Gurt, Lloyd’s Barbeque Buckets, and General Mills Foodservice products.  Please have your child bring the Box Tops to the school office.

Collection of Campbell's soup labels has already begun.  Please save those labels and help Wilson School receive free items for the classrooms.

Thanks for your help.

Wilson School Improvement

As part of our continuous improvement at Wilson Intermediate School, every year we identify areas of concern. We analyze results from our different surveys, school and district test results and student needs identified by staff. This year we have four goals:.
.....-To Improve Writing Skills
.....-To Improve Reading Skills
.....-To Improve Communication
.....-To Improve Math Skills.
Our main area of concentration will be to improve writing skills. Teachers will be asking students to write on a daily basis. Several instructional mini-writing lessons will be given weekly. Please be watching for your child's writing projects.

Once again, students and staff at Wilson will review the school code, SCORE.  Your might be wondering what is a school code?  A school code demonstrates the  beliefs and ideas that all members of the Wilson School community follow.  The SCORE code will be the focus for a school-wide theme.  What does SCORE stand for?
Safety is freedom from danger or harm (the feeling of security
Citizenship is displaying loyalty and duty in working together to make Wilson the best place it can be
Ownership is taking responsibility for your own actions
Respect is honoring the rights and feelings of individuals
Etiquette is displaying consideration for others, manners, and a positive attitude
Every teacher  will share and discuss the SCORE code with your child.  Each student will receive a copy of the SCORE code to share with their parents.  If you have any questions about the SCORE code, please feel free to contact the school.
