About our School

I would like to welcome you to Edison Junior High School. Edison Junior High opened in 1953 on the North side of Pekin and has the distinction of being the longest continuously operating school in District 108.  The Edison learning community consists of seventh and eighth grade students and their families.  Our mission is to prepare all students socially, emotionally, and academically to become independent learners and cooperative problem solvers.

Edison operates under the middle school philosophy and provides a number of opportunities based on that model.  We are divided into four interdisciplinary teams which all include math, science, language arts, social studies, and are supported by a special education teacher.  Our students are looped and have the same team of teachers during both years of junior high. Edison also has an exploratory department which includes art, music, and physical education classes.

The Edison RtI system provides intervention for children in the areas of math, reading, writing, and social emotional wellness.  Your child's teachers provide interventions on an as needed basis in their classrooms to assist their students who may be struggling at times during the year. We also have a math interventionist, literacy interventionist and full time counselor on our staff who provide more intense targeted intervention to students in need.

Edison is a Partnerships in Comprehensive Literacy school and we use reading and writing as a vehicle for learning in all classes.   Edison is committed to developing enthusiastic, life-long learners.  We expect our students to take an active role in their own education, home and community by offering them diverse authentic learning experiences.  This idea not only includes students, but includes our staff as well.

Because our staff takes its own professional learning very seriously, many of our teachers have either earned a master’s degree, or are pursuing ongoing education.  Our school also has the support of a district literacy coach and an in house literacy coach to facilitate adult learning and help our teachers understand and implement best practices for educating our children.  We believe in the power of collaborative learning teams at Edison.  Each department meets regularly for professional learning.
