Using Picture Books as Windows and Mirrors to Economic Diversity

Many children and families experience economic hardships. These hardships may include food or housing insecurity, unemployment, or simply the day-to-day challenges of making ends meet. Picture books are an excellent way to provide windows and mirrors into the daily, lived experiences of those experiencing such challenges. Children who are experiencing economic hardships can benefit from seeing themselves represented in stories about families who experience similar situations, and children who are more financially secure can develop empathy for those who have less.

In this course, participants will explore picture books that highlight the love, joy, and togetherness families from a variety of backgrounds experience as they tackle economic challenges. A book analysis tool will be provided to guide the selection of texts that tell asset-based stories of economic diversity. Specific strategies for engaging students in discussions of picture books about economic diversity will be shared. The books and strategies shared will be appropriate for a wide range of grade levels and content areas.
